RAVA / SOOJI PONGAL

My mom used to make this pongal, and read in a leading Tamil magazine too. It is a good twist instead of preparing uppma all the time.

Ingredients

Rava / Sooji – 1 cup
Moongdhall – ½ cup
Milk – 1 cup
Turmeric powder – one generous pinch ( Optional)
Hing – one pinch
Black pepper – 1 tsp
Cummin seeds – 1 tsp
Grated ginger – 2 tsp
Cashew – 10 to 12
Curry leaves – few
Oil, ghee, salt as required

How to make Rava Pongal:

Combine moongdhall, salt and turmeric powder and pressure cook.

Heat oil, ghee in a pan and add pepper and cumin seeds.

When it splutters add ginger, curry leaves and cashew.Add the rava.

Saute well, when the rava is fried add milk and 3 cups of boiling water.

Add the cooked moongdhall , hing, salt (already we have added to dhall so watch out) .

Add the ghee and keep the flame in low and cook for ten minutes and then serve with
coconut chutney.

Note: This pongal needs 3 cups of water and 1 cup of milk. When I made it for the first time I thought it wil be so.. much and used 2 cups of water , that was not good.

hey, this is aj's favorite. i learnt it from vedavalli's book, i think:)I prefer this over upma too..anyways, with only little oil, no one likes my upma ;-)

I don't add turmeric powder, but with turmeric powder it looks beautiful :)Nice entry.

Hi da.I have once tried rava pongal. But didn't come out that well. Your recipe is awesome. Even Prasi liked it. Normally, he doesn't relish pongal much. But to my amazement he liked rava pongal a lot. Thanks darling.
